The Community Bank® model was created by Bendigo Bank Limited after the closure of one third of all bank branches in Australia during the 1990s.

There are now more than 250 Community Bank® branches around Australia including 43 in NSW. The newest NSW branches include Spit Junction, Katoomba and Pyrmont. Another ten communities are working towards their own Community Bank® in the next year or two.

The model is based on the community owning its own branch as a local business, with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited providing a comprehensive banking service on a franchise basis. The Community Bank® will provide every banking product and service that is available from any of the majors and it will compete with them based on superior service. Community Bank® branches are established in communities that have every bank, building society and credit union represented as well as in communities that have none.

Early growth of the Community Bank® model arose from community anger at the closure of major bank branches. Now, the continuing growth of the network comes from the success of the model in delivering significant community benefits in infrastructure and services and delivering an exceptionally high level of personal service. The attached brochure shows how a Community Bank®  can support our community.
